THANK YOU
Thank you for supporting the Mike Doyle golf outing and scholarship for so many years. This year’s event marked a poignant milestone: 37 years since Mike was tragically killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The outing has long served as a powerful way for family, friends, and supporters to come together in his memory, and this year was no exception.
It is bittersweet to share that this was our final outing. We are proud to say that we have overachieved our original goal: establishing a perpetual scholarship in Mike’s name at his alma mater, the University of Dayton. Though organizing this annual event has always been a labor of love, after 37 years, the work involved has simply become too burdensome to continue. We are ending on a high note, filled with pride, gratitude, and deep appreciation for everyone who has helped along the way.
Over the last 37 years, thanks to you, we have raised over a half-million dollars. 142 students have received $524,604 in awards. UD manages the contributions in their endowment. Even after paying over a half-million dollars in scholarships, the market value of the fund is close to one million dollars. This prudent financial management along with your generosity will enable the scholarship to be awarded in perpetuity. Pretty amazing.
Many have expressed an interest in continuing to support the scholarship at UD. Thank you for that. If interested, you can send a check to The University of Dayton, 300 College Park, Dayton, Ohio 45469-7054 (last four digits are important) and direct the contribution to the Michael J. Doyle Memorial Scholarship fund. Additionally, you can go to the University of Dayton’s web site, Donation · University of Dayton · GiveCampus and using the drop box "Select Fund Designation(s)*" and typing "Michael J. Doyle Memorial Scholarship (Endowment)".
On behalf of Mike, the other 269 victims in the bombing, the family, UD and me, thank you again for all that you have done over the years.
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand
Mike was traveling home from England on 12/21/88 when terrorists ignited a bomb on Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland. 270 innocent people were murdered.
We held the final outing, the 37th annual, on September 13, 2025. Thank you to all that remembered Mike and supported the scholarship over the decades.
The scholarship at UD has been awarded over 142 times and over $524,604 has been awarded. A committee of 3 accounting professors select the recipients. The book value is approaching one million dollars. The scholarship is endowed and will be awarded in perpetuity.
